Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hayyen, said on Monday that the participation of Minister of Justice, Counselor Nasser Al-Sumait, in presenting Kuwait’s comprehensive national report on human rights before the United Nations Human Rights Council reflects the country’s firm commitment to international human rights conventions.
In a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Ambassador Al-Hayyen emphasized that this high-level participation underscores Kuwait’s unwavering belief in the role of the Human Rights Council and the importance of its mechanisms in advancing and safeguarding human rights worldwide. He reiterated Kuwait’s full commitment to maintaining positive and constructive cooperation with all UN bodies and international organizations.
Ambassador Al-Hayyen also affirmed that Kuwait, under the guidance of its wise leadership, remains dedicated to a humanitarian approach grounded in international legitimacy, aiming to alleviate human suffering and promote global security and stability.
He noted that the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) serves as a vital platform for Kuwait to highlight its national achievements and concrete progress in the field of human rights, in accordance with international standards and the country’s voluntary pledges.
In this context, the ambassador reiterated Kuwait’s readiness to continue collaborating with international institutions, recognizing their essential role in addressing global challenges—particularly amid the dire conditions resulting from the ongoing war in Gaza and escalating humanitarian crises around the world. He stressed the need for urgent international coordination and consensus to bring an end to these tragedies.
Kuwait is scheduled to present its comprehensive national report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, as part of the UPR’s fourth cycle. The State of Kuwait has previously submitted reports in May 2010, January 2015, and January 2020.
The Universal Periodic Review is a UN mechanism through which the human rights records of all Member States are reviewed periodically. It provides a forum for countries to report on national developments, share progress made in upholding human rights, and respond to recommendations issued during prior reviews.
