India’s Congress party picks V.D. Satheesan as Kerala CM after 10-day leadership deadlock

In a major political development for India’s Congress party, V.D. Satheesan has been chosen as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, bringing an end to nearly 10 days of intense speculation following the United Democratic Front’s sweeping electoral victory in the southern state.

The 61-year-old former Leader of Opposition emerged as the consensus choice of the Congress high command, edging out senior party leaders K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala in a closely watched leadership race that drew national attention within Indian political circles.

The announcement, delayed from Wednesday to Thursday after marathon consultations in New Delhi, is being viewed as a significant move by the Congress leadership to project a fresh face with strong grassroots appeal as the party seeks to strengthen its position nationally after its emphatic comeback in Kerala.

A first-time Chief Minister and a leader who has never held a ministerial portfolio, Satheesan credited his elevation to the unwavering support of Congress workers and the wider UDF alliance.

“I achieved this with the support of lakhs of Congress workers and Team UDF,” Satheesan said shortly after being named the party’s leader.

K.C. Venugopal, widely regarded as one of Rahul Gandhi’s closest aides and a strong contender for the post, publicly backed the decision and pledged full cooperation.

“I am fully satisfied. I will stand with the high command’s decision,” said the Alappuzha MP, congratulating Satheesan and assuring support to both him and the incoming UDF government.

The delay in naming Kerala’s Chief Minister drew comparisons with Karnataka’s prolonged leadership tussle between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar, which had exposed deep divisions within the party.

However, sources indicated that Satheesan, who enjoyed strong grassroots support and backing from key UDF ally Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), was unwilling to settle for a secondary role in the new government.

The IUML’s support was viewed as particularly significant, especially given the political importance of Wayanad, a constituency traditionally represented by the IUML before it was ceded to the Congress for Rahul Gandhi and later Priyanka Gandhi. With Muslim voters playing a decisive role in the region, Congress leadership reportedly took the ally’s views seriously.

The Congress-led UDF secured a commanding mandate in the Kerala Assembly elections, winning 102 seats and ending the Left Democratic Front’s hopes of securing a third consecutive term under Pinarayi Vijayan.

A six-time MLA from Paravur in Ernakulam district, Satheesan has represented the constituency continuously since 2001. A practicing lawyer at the Kerala High Court, he first rose through student politics as chairman of the MG University Union representing the Kerala Students Union, the Congress party’s student wing.

Senior Congress veterans including A.K. Antony, V.M. Sudheeran and K. Muraleedharan reportedly urged the leadership to respect public sentiment, which overwhelmingly favored Satheesan as the face of the UDF’s resurgence in Kerala politics.
