At least 7 killed in Delhi building collapse, rescuers sift through rubble looking for survivors
Delhi Police said 12 people had been rescued so far
At least seven people have died after a five-story building collapsed in New Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, with rescue teams continuing efforts to locate survivors trapped under the rubble.
The nearly 50-year-old building collapsed on Sunday, with another body recovered by rescue personnel on Monday, raising the death toll to seven.
Satya Niketan is a popular student hub near Delhi University’s South Campus, where hundreds of university students live, often in crowded conditions. Local media reported that the building housed a private hostel.
Delhi Police said 12 people had been rescued so far, while emergency teams warned that others could still be trapped beneath the debris. Rescue operations involve disaster-response personnel, firefighters and police, who are using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to search for survivors.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said its trauma centre received 10 victims. Five were brought dead, while another patient who was critically injured later died.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said water had accumulated in the building’s basement and suggested that the combination of water accumulation and ongoing repair work may have contributed to the collapse.
Police have registered a First Information Report against the building owners under Sections 105, 290 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to local media reports.
The sections relate to culpable homicide, negligence in the construction or repair of buildings, and acts that endanger human life.
