Hinduja Group Chairman Gopichand P Hinduja dies at 85

Gopichand P. Hinduja, chairman of the Hinduja Group, passed away at the age of 85 in a London hospital. He was the second of the four Hinduja brothers. The eldest, Srichand Hinduja, died in 2023, while the surviving brothers are Prakash Hinduja and Ashok Hinduja.

Affectionately known as “GP” in business circles, Gopichand joined the family enterprise in 1950 and played a key role in expanding it from an Indo–Middle East trading firm into a global conglomerate.

A graduate of Bombay’s Jai Hind College, he was awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Westminster and Richmond College, according to the company’s website, according to NDTV World.

Today, the Hinduja Group operates across 11 sectors, including automotive, banking and finance, IT, healthcare, real estate, power, and media and entertainment. Among its most recognized brands are Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank, and NXTDIGITAL Limited.

The 2025 edition of the Sunday Times Rich List ranked the Hinduja family as the wealthiest in the United Kingdom, with an estimated fortune of £32.3 billion.

The family made headlines in 2021 over a high-profile dispute that reached a London court. Srichand Hinduja’s daughters, Vinoo and Shanu, accused their uncles—Gopichand, Prakash, and Ashok—of excluding them from family business affairs. At the time, Srichand, known as SP, was battling dementia.

In response, the three brothers pointed to a 2013 family agreement stating that “everything belongs to everyone and nothing belongs to anyone,” a pact that became the center of a bitter legal and familial conflict.
