Saudi Arabia hold Uruguay to dramatic 1-1 World Cup draw

The result leaves Group H finely balanced, with Saudi Arabia showing they are capable of challenging for qualification to the knockout stages alongside Uruguay, Spain and Cape Verde.

Saudi Arabia battled to a memorable 1-1 draw against Uruguay in their opening Group H encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, delivering another determined display on football’s biggest stage.

The Green Falcons stunned the two-time world champions with a disciplined and energetic first-half performance at Miami Stadium, frustrating Uruguay’s star-studded attack while creating dangerous opportunities on the counterattack.

Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 41st minute when defender Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest inside the penalty area after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to deal cleanly with a corner kick. The Saudi fans erupted as the underdogs carried their advantage into halftime.

Uruguay struggled to find rhythm during the opening half despite boasting experienced names such as Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez. The South Americans improved significantly after the break as coach Marcelo Bielsa pushed his midfield further forward in search of an equaliser.

Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais emerged as one of the stars of the match with a series of crucial saves that kept Uruguay at bay for long periods. His performance drew praise from football fans and observers across social media, with many describing it as one of the finest goalkeeping displays of the tournament so far.

Uruguay finally found the breakthrough in the 80th minute when Maxi Araújo converted from close range after Al-Owais parried an initial header into a crowded penalty area. Despite late pressure from the South Americans, Saudi Arabia defended bravely to secure an important point.

The result leaves Group H finely balanced, with Saudi Arabia showing they are capable of challenging for qualification to the knockout stages alongside Uruguay, Spain and Cape Verde.
