Fifa World Cup 2026

Iran and New Zealand 2-2 share spoils in thrilling World Cup clash

Iran and New Zealand battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Group G match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both nations showing determination and attacking ambition in a lively contest in Los Angeles.

The match exploded into action early as New Zealand stunned the Asian side with an opening goal in the seventh minute.

Elijah Just finished confidently after good work from captain Chris Wood, giving the All Whites a dream start against one of Asia’s strongest football nations.

Iran gradually settled into the match and responded with increased attacking pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 32nd minute when experienced defender Ramin Rezaeian scored the equaliser during a frantic scramble inside the New Zealand penalty area.

Both teams continued to create chances in an open and fast-paced encounter. New Zealand regained the lead in the second half when Elijah Just struck again in the 54th minute, once more benefiting from the creativity and aerial presence of Chris Wood. The goal capped an outstanding performance from the New Zealand forward line.

Iran refused to surrender and pushed aggressively for another equaliser. Their efforts were rewarded in the 64th minute when Mohammad Mohebi powered home a header from a precise cross delivered by Saman Ghoddos, bringing the score level at 2-2.

The final stages saw both sides searching for a winning goal, but strong defensive work and several important saves ensured the points were shared. Iran enjoyed greater possession throughout the contest, while New Zealand looked dangerous on the counterattack and from set pieces.

Iran entered the tournament carrying significant expectations under coach Amir Ghalenoei, with striker Mehdi Taremi leading the attack. New Zealand, meanwhile, arrived in the World Cup after an impressive qualification campaign and demonstrated they are capable of competing strongly at the global level.

The draw leaves Group G finely balanced after Belgium and Egypt also shared points in their opening fixture earlier in the day. Both Iran and New Zealand will believe qualification to the knockout stages remains within reach.

The match also attracted major international attention because of the political backdrop surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament hosted in the United States. Despite the off-field tensions, the focus inside the stadium remained firmly on football as supporters from both nations created a vibrant atmosphere.

Elijah Just emerged as one of the standout performers of the evening with his two-goal display, while Chris Wood’s leadership and creativity caused repeated problems for the Iranian defence. For Iran, Rezaeian and Mohebi delivered crucial goals, while midfielder Saman Ghoddos impressed with his vision and delivery.

Iran will next face Belgium in a crucial Group G encounter, while New Zealand prepare for a difficult meeting with Egypt as both nations continue their quest for a place in the knockout rounds.
