Côte d’Ivoire kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a tense Group E clash in Philadelphia on Sunday night.
The African champions looked set to settle for a draw before substitute Amad Diallo struck in the 90th minute to hand the Ivorians a priceless win in front of a lively crowd at Lincoln Financial Field.
Both teams created chances in an evenly contested encounter, but it was Côte d’Ivoire who showed greater attacking intent, especially after the break. Ecuador threatened early and struck the woodwork twice in the first half, while veteran striker Enner Valencia struggled to find space against a disciplined Ivorian defence.
Coach Emerse Faé’s side relied on the experience of captain Franck Kessié and the pace of teenage forward Yan Diomande, who earned a starting role after an impressive season in Germany. Nicolas Pépé and Elye Wahi also caused problems for Ecuador’s back line throughout the match.

Ecuador, unbeaten in their previous 19 matches coming into the tournament, were left frustrated after failing to convert several promising opportunities despite enjoying long spells of possession. Midfielder Moisés Caicedo worked tirelessly in midfield, but Sebastián Beccacece’s side lacked a clinical edge in the final third.
The result places Côte d’Ivoire in a strong position in Group E following Germany’s emphatic win over Curaçao earlier in the day. The Ivorians will next face Germany in a crucial showdown, while Ecuador must bounce back against Curaçao to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
