The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has signed a contract worth KD84.667 million for the supply and installation of 400kV overhead transmission lines as part of efforts to strengthen Kuwait’s electricity infrastructure and support renewable energy integration.
The contract was awarded to the winning company after the ministry secured approval from the Audit Bureau, following earlier approval from the Central Agency for Public Tenders on March 5, confirming that the bid met all required technical specifications and tender conditions.
According to informed ministry sources, the project will connect the Shagaya Z solar power conversion station to the Subiya power station, enabling electricity generated from photovoltaic panels at the Shagaya Renewable Energy Complex to be transferred directly into the national power grid.
Sources explained that the project represents a key component of Kuwait’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity and improve the reliability of electricity transmission networks across the country.
The ministry is also continuing coordination with the Public Authority for Partnership Projects to accelerate implementation of the next phases of the Shagaya Renewable Energy Project. Officials noted that the tender for the first Phase Three project, with a production capacity of 1,100 megawatts, has already been awarded to the preferred investor.
Meanwhile, the ministry is awaiting the opening of bids for the second Phase Three project, which is expected to generate 500 megawatts.
The Shagaya Renewable Energy Complex is considered one of Kuwait’s flagship clean energy projects and forms part of the country’s long-term plans to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on conventional fuel generation.
