Pressure mounts on UK PM Starmer as Labour faces election fallout, internal revolt

Following the poor performance by Labor in last week’s local elections in England and elections elsewhere in the UK, pressure is mounting against Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign following four ministerial aides’ resignations and around sixty MPs so far calling for his departure.

Speaking earlier today to Labor MPs, Starmer said, “I know I have my doubters and I know I need to prove them wrong,” adding that the country would not forgive the Labor party if they triggered a leadership contest.

As for the results of last week’s elections, Starmer stressed it was his responsibility to “explain how as a political and electoral force, we will be better and do better in the months and years ahead because we are not just facing dangerous times, but … very dangerous opponents.

“If we don’t get this right our country will go down a very dark path,” he affirmed.

Despite his call for unity and working together, the resignation of Labor ministerial aides and sixty MPs calling for resignation or a timetable for departure has been mounting.

Labor backbench MP Catherine West had a bid to trigger a leadership challenge against Starmer, but backed down, while still calling on the Prime Minister to leave by September.

Though the growing number of MPs might give an impression of an impending formal leadership contest within Labor, the rules stipulated that a formal challenge requires 20 percent of 405 the Parliamentary Labor Party MPs, according the Institute for Government (IfG), a leading independent thinktank in the UK.

MPs must nominate a challenger for the position or the Prime Minister could resign for this contest to occur, it affirmed.

Last week, the Labor party suffered huge losses in the local elections to Reform UK, headed by Nigel Farage, and other parties including the Green Party losing councils as well as councilor seats throughout the UK. Labor in Wales also lost in the parliament elections there from Welsh Plaid Cymru and Reform UK.
