Trump says ceasefire with Tehran ‘on massive life support’

US President Donald Trump says the Iran ceasefire is “on massive life support”, and slammed Iran’s response to a US peace proposal, sent yesterday via Pakistan.

The US president has described the ceasefire with Iran as “unbelievably weak”.

“I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a one-percent chance of living’.”

“It’s a stupid proposal, and nobody would take it,” Trump says of Iran’s response to the US peace plan.

Here’s more from Trump’s comments to reporters at the White House:

  • The US president says Iranian leaders had agreed to allow the removal of all enriched uranium, but then changed their mind.
  • “They said you’re going to have to take it. We were going to go with them. But they changed their mind because they didn’t put it in the paper.”
  • Describing Iranian leaders as “lunatics”, Trump reiterates that he has a “very simple” plan: “The plan is they cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
  • Trump describes the Iranian firing of missiles at Gulf countries as a “tremendous strategic mistake”. “Nobody thought Saudi Arabia and Qatar and the UAE were going to get hit, or Kuwait, Bahrain.”
  • He says that soaring oil and gas prices in the US will “drop like a rock” as soon as the war is over.

Diplomatic solution with Iran remains ‘very possible’

Despite earlier saying the ceasefire is on “life support”, the US president has told reporters that his administration can still reach a diplomatic solution.

“I think it’s very possible. I’ve had a deal with them four or five times, they change they mind,” he said, describing Iran’s leadership as “very dishonourable”.

As we’ve been reporting, Iran has described the Trump administration’s demands as “unreasonable” while defending its response to the US proposal as “not excessive”.
