China’s Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea for the first time in nearly seven years for a high-profile two-day visit that underscores shifting regional alignments and gives North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a stage to highlight closer ties with Beijing and other former Cold War allies.
The visit marked a renewed moment of engagement between the two leaders and came as China, North Korea’s main economic lifeline, was expected to reassert its influence over Pyongyang after years in which the North had drawn closer to Russia.
It was the first meeting between Xi and Kim since the North Korean leader visited Beijing for a World War II commemorative event in September 2025.
The trip reflected competing priorities for both leaders, with each side seeking to reinforce its position in a rapidly evolving regional landscape.
North Korean leader in recent years prioritized ties with Russia, including sending troops and munitions to support Moscow’s war in Ukraine. But he had also sought to rebuild momentum with China in an effort to ease isolation and strengthen his diplomatic and economic options.
Analysts said Kim’s outreach to Beijing reflected his broader strategy of positioning North Korea within a “new Cold War” framework and presenting Pyongyang as part of a united front against Washington, according to Manila Bulletin.
Historically, North Korea has maintained an “equidistance” policy between China and Russia, balancing both powers to maximize political and economic benefits.
For China, the visit is an opportunity to reassert influence over a long-standing ally that had increasingly leaned toward Russia, using economic incentives and aid as traditional tools of engagement.
