“IAEA” experts visit Kuwait to review nuclear security plan

Dr. Nader Al-Awadhi stated that the International Atomic Energy Agency's visit will review and update Kuwait's Nuclear Security Support Plan, focusing on security needs and improvements.

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research announced yesterday that a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be visiting Kuwait starting today, with the official visit scheduled to last until next Thursday. The purpose of the visit is to review and assess the integrated nuclear security support plan for the State of Kuwait.

The Executive Commissioner for International Cooperation at the Institute and National Liaison Officer with the Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Nader Al-Awadhi, stated that the visit will include a series of technical meetings and a specialized workshop. These sessions are being organized in cooperation with the Radiation Protection Department at the Ministry of Health.

Al-Awadhi added that the meetings and workshops are designed to review and update the achievements of the Nuclear Security Support Plan, aligning them with evolving security needs. The focus will be on prioritizing measures to ensure the maintenance of an effective and sustainable nuclear security system for Kuwait.

The workshop will cover the six key functional areas of the International Nuclear Security Support Plan. These include national policy and strategy, legislative and regulatory frameworks, as well as deterrence, detection, response, and assurance, with a focus on continuous improvement in maintaining a robust nuclear security system.

Al-Awadhi emphasized that as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Kuwait is committed to implementing all agreements related to nuclear security, including safeguards for radioactive and nuclear materials. He further stressed that Kuwait has taken proactive measures to prevent illegal access to these materials, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening nuclear security within the country.

Kuwait was one of the first countries in the region to develop the integrated nuclear security support plan in 2009, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency. The plan was created with the active participation of several relevant national authorities, underscoring the country’s commitment to advancing nuclear security.

Al-Awadhi stated that the plan aims to support Kuwait’s national efforts in strengthening nuclear security, identify areas that require improvement, and offer the necessary technical and training assistance to ensure the continued effectiveness of the country’s nuclear security measures.

The meetings and workshops will involve the participation of 40 representatives from various national entities, including the Ministry of Health (Radiation Protection Department), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior (Civil Defense Department, General Directorate of Coast Guard, General Directorate of Facilities Security, General Administration of Land Border Security, General Directorate of Forensic Evidence, and the General Information Department). Additionally, representatives from the General Fire Force and General Directorate of Customs will also take part.

Al-Awadhi stressed the importance of this visit in reinforcing the cooperation between Kuwait and the International Atomic Energy Agency, as well as supporting efforts to sustain and enhance nuclear security at the national level.
