Kuwaiti marriages drop by 6% in first nine months of 2025

Statistics indicate a broad decline across most categories, suggesting a continuing downward trend in Kuwaiti marriage rates for 2025

Statistical data reveals a notable decline in the number of marriages among Kuwaitis during the first nine months of 2025, with 8,538 marriage contracts registered as compared to 9,065 during the same period in 2024 — a decrease of about 527 cases, or 6.1 percent.

The drop encompassed marriages between Kuwaiti men and both Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti women. Despite the decline, marriages to Kuwaiti women continued to represent the majority of total contracts, recording 7,663 cases so far in 2025 compared to 7,966 last year — down by 303 cases.

A significant decrease was also observed in marriages between Kuwaiti men and Gulf women, which fell by 30 percent from 413 cases in 2024 to just 289 in 2025. Similarly, marriages to Yemeni women were nearly halved, declining from 17 to just 8 cases.

Other notable declines included marriages to Jordanian women (from 54 to 37), European women (from 28 to 22), and American women (from 14 to 10). Marriages involving stateless persons (Bedoon) also dropped from 175 to 143, marking a decrease of 32 cases.

Some categories, however, showed stability or modest increases. Marriages to Iraqi women remained steady at 77 cases compared to 76 last year, while marriages to Egyptian women rose by 15.3 percent, reaching 45 cases compared to 39 in 2024.

Marriage to Syrian women stayed relatively stable at 68 cases compared to 70 previously, while marriages to Lebanese women increased sharply by 37.5 percent, rising from 24 to 33 cases.

Marriages to Asian women fell from 106 to 86 cases, a decline of 19 percent, while marriages to African women inched up slightly from 9 to 10 cases. The data also recorded a single marriage to a Sudanese woman — a nationality not present in last year’s records.

Additionally, marriages to women from other Arab countries dropped from 33 to 23 cases, and those involving women from other unspecified nationalities fell from 31 to 17.

Overall, the statistics indicate a broad decline across most categories, suggesting a continuing downward trend in Kuwaiti marriage rates for 2025.
