Guyana marks 60th Independence Anniversary, celebrates three decades of ties with Kuwait

The Times Kuwait Report
The Embassy of Guyana in Kuwait commemorated two historic milestones this year — the 60th anniversary of Guyana’s Independence and the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the State of Kuwait.
Guyana gained independence on May 26, 1966, embarking on a journey of nation-building, democratic governance, and sustainable development. Six decades later, the South American nation has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, driven by its natural resources, expanding energy sector, and commitment to inclusive growth.
The anniversary celebrations also mark 30 years since Guyana and Kuwait formally established diplomatic relations on August 17, 1995. Over the years, the two countries have built a partnership based on mutual respect, solidarity, and shared aspirations for peace, prosperity, development, and adherence to international law.

Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Embassy, Chargé d’Affaires Ambassador Troy Torrington highlighted the strength and significance of Guyana-Kuwait relations and the steady growth of bilateral cooperation over the past three decades.
“The friendship between Guyana and Kuwait is rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a common commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation,” said Torrington. “The relationship has evolved significantly over the years, and we see tremendous opportunities for expanding collaboration in trade, investment, energy, agriculture, and development.
”Torrington also expressed appreciation for Kuwait’s longstanding support of Guyana’s development agenda and voiced confidence that bilateral relations would continue to flourish in the years ahead.
The Embassy noted that Kuwait has earned global recognition for its humanitarian initiatives and development assistance, contributing to infrastructure development and improved livelihoods in many countries worldwide.
Guyana acknowledged Kuwait’s role as a valued development partner and emphasized that the progress achieved through bilateral cooperation reflects the benefits of meaningful partnerships between like-minded nations.
Relations between the two countries have been strengthened through high-level exchanges and a series of bilateral agreements covering economic and technical cooperation, trade, investment protection, taxation, air services, and cultural exchanges.
A landmark moment came during the 2010 official visit of Kuwait’s Prime Minister to Guyana, when several key agreements were signed, paving the way for expanded cooperation.
Guyana also recognized Kuwait’s contributions to major development projects over the years, describing them as symbols of friendship, collaboration, and solidarity.
The Embassy noted that Guyana’s current economic transformation offers fresh opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure, finance, agriculture, food security, construction, mining, and the oil and gas industry.
The Embassy further highlighted Guyana’s role on the international stage. As President of the United Nations Security Council in July 2025, Guyana chaired discussions on successor arrangements to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), including issues related to missing persons and the recovery of Kuwait’s national archives.
“These efforts demonstrate the value and potential of South-South cooperation in advancing the interests and development goals of both countries,” Torrington said.
On behalf of His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the Government, and the people of Guyana, the Embassy extended congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, as well as the Government and people of Kuwait, on the occasion of 30 years of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The Embassy stated that commemorative events are being held in both Guyana and Kuwait throughout the year, culminating in a diplomatic reception hosted by the Embassy of Guyana in Kuwait to celebrate the twin milestones and reaffirm the enduring partnership between the two friendly nations.
