Donald Trump said he held a “very good conversation” with Vladimir Putin, with discussions spanning the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the dialogue focused heavily on the Ukraine conflict, noting that he had suggested “a little bit of a ceasefire,” adding that Putin “might” consider such a move. He further indicated that both leaders exchanged views on potential pathways to de-escalation.
Beyond Ukraine, Trump disclosed that Putin offered to assist in efforts to resolve the conflict involving Iran, particularly addressing the sensitive issue of enriched uranium, which remains a key obstacle to any agreement, dw.com reports.
However, Trump emphasized that his priority remained ending the war in Ukraine, stating, “I’d much rather have you be involved with ending the war with Ukraine.”
According to the Kremlin, the phone call also placed significant emphasis on developments in the Middle East, particularly tensions in the Arabian Sea. Putin’s diplomatic aide, Yuri Ushakov, said both leaders discussed Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional stability.
Putin reportedly welcomed Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire related to Iran, describing it as a constructive step that could open the door for negotiations and contribute to stabilizing the region.
At the same time, he cautioned against renewed military action by the United States and Israel, warning of “inevitable and extremely damaging consequences” not only for Iran and its neighbors, but for the global community.
On Ukraine, Putin proposed the possibility of a temporary ceasefire to coincide with the upcoming anniversary of the end of World War II, signaling a potential symbolic opportunity for de-escalation.
The conversation underscores ongoing diplomatic maneuvering amid complex geopolitical crises, with both leaders exploring parallel tracks of conflict resolution in Europe and the Middle East.
