US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that China has not challenged the US since the start of what he described as the “Epic Fury” military operation against Iran, despite Beijing’s reliance on oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking to reporters, Trump praised his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing him as “a great man” and saying both sides continue to reach major trade deals.
He said China obtains around 60 percent of its oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz but has shown what he called “respectful behavior” and has not confronted Washington during the ongoing situation.
Trump added that the US has offered alternative options for oil shipping routes, including supplies from Alaska, and highlighted strong trade ties with countries such as Japan and South Korea.
He also claimed the US now has “complete and absolute control” over maritime operations linked to the blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz under the socalled “Freedom Project,” which he said aims to secure commercial shipping lanes.
Trump is expected to visit China on May 14-15 for a summit meeting with Xi Jinping, according to his remarks.
