Ministry terminates services of 83 expat teachers as part of Kuwaitization plan

In line with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ national replacement and Kuwaitization strategy, 83 expatriate teachers specializing in Islamic Studies and Quranic Sciences have been formally notified that their contracts will be terminated by September 30.
The decision comes under the directives and supervision of Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammed Al-Wasmi, and aims to provide employment opportunities for Kuwaiti nationals in the education sector, specifically in Islamic education and Arabic language disciplines, reports Al-Rai daily.
The following is the breakdown of terminated positions by region:
- Ahmadi and Mubarak Al-Kabeer governorates: 18 teachers
- Farwaniya and Jahra governorates: 34 teachers
- Capital and Hawalli governorates: 31 teachers
A source from the ministry stated, “This step is part of a broader policy to reduce the reliance on expatriate teachers, improve the quality of education, rationalize public spending, and create job opportunities for Kuwaiti citizens eager to join the teaching profession within the Ministry.”
While affirming the termination notices, the ministry clarified that no new appointments will be made until a comprehensive study is conducted to assess staffing needs across departments. The hiring of expatriate teachers is currently suspended.
“We are committed to implementing the Kuwaitization policy in a way that does not disrupt educational operations,” the source emphasized, noting that the relevant departments have been directed to identify staffing needs for the upcoming academic year.
The move underscores a continued government push across various sectors to prioritize the employment of Kuwaiti nationals, particularly in public sector institutions.
