Kuwait moves to regulate charity work through a centralized digital platform

Move aims to streamline operations, enhance oversight, and minimize risks of mismanagement or misuse of funds

Efforts are being exerted by the government to reform and regulate charity activities in Kuwait to address existing flaws and establish robust legal and regulatory frameworks.

A government source told Al-Rai daily that this is done to ensure transparency, integrity, and higher efficiency in charitable and humanitarian work.

The sources added, the recent regulatory steps — such as the temporary suspension of collection of donations — are part of broader efforts to cleanse the sector, what the government called, from any internal or external misconduct or suspicion.

The sources reassured that charity work in Kuwait continues to be active and impactful, but will now operate under more stringent controls.

One key proposal includes consolidating all donation activities through a centralized digital platform.

Donations will only be accepted and distributed through this system, which is designed to meet the highest financial transparency standards, both locally and internationally. This would enhance the credibility of charity operations and protect Kuwait’s global reputation.

The government also anticipates a reduction in the number of registered charity societies. Under the new strategy, only main societies will be retained while their branches are likely to be purged.

This move aims to streamline operations, enhance oversight, and minimize risks of mismanagement or misuse of funds.
