Kuwait makes significant strides in digestive and liver disease treatment

The Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi stated that Kuwait has made significant strides in the treatment of digestive system and liver diseases in recent years. He attributed this progress to the dedicated efforts of local professionals and the fruitful collaboration with international institutions.

In his opening speech at the third conference of the Gastroenterology and Liver Association on Friday, Minister Al-Awadhi highlighted one of Kuwait’s key achievements, the Haya Al-Habib Center for the Digestive System at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital. He expressed pride in the center’s role as a hub for research and studies, noting that it has conducted over 30 scientific studies in the past five years, many of which have been published in prestigious scientific conferences and journals.

Al-Awadhi also mentioned the Thunayan Al Ghanim Digestive System Center at Al Amiri Hospital, which recently received international accreditation. This makes it the first training center in the Middle East accredited by the International Bowel Ultrasound Organization (IBUS) to train doctors in diagnosing and monitoring patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Furthermore, Al-Awadhi highlighted the success of the Liver Transplant Unit at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, which, in collaboration with international hospitals, has performed liver transplant surgeries for over 123 Kuwaiti patients in recent years.

Al-Awadhi also praised the Gastroenterology Department at Jahra Hospital for its achievements, particularly in performing precise colon tumor removal procedures using endoscopy, eliminating the need for surgery. He noted that in the past year alone, over 2,000 interventional endoscopic procedures were carried out, along with 1,200 cases treated using ultrasound.

Moreover, Al-Awadhi emphasized that these accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of Kuwait’s wise leadership for the healthcare sector and the Ministry’s ambitious vision to advance medical services, strengthening Kuwait’s position on the global medical map. He further noted that ongoing cooperation with both local and international institutions enhances Kuwait’s ability to provide advanced healthcare services based on solid scientific foundations.

Al-Awadhi described the third conference of the Gastroenterology and Liver Association as a distinguished scientific event, providing a platform for a select group of doctors, researchers, and experts in gastroenterology and liver diseases from both Kuwait and abroad. He emphasized the conference’s significance due to its rich and diverse scientific program, which includes specialized workshops designed to enhance the skills of doctors in advanced fields.

Dr. Hiba Al-Farhan, head of the conference organizing committee, stated that the three-day conference reflects their belief in the importance of strengthening and unifying medical efforts to achieve the highest levels of progress in the field of digestive system and liver diseases.

Al-Farhan added that the conference features innovative workshops aimed at improving doctors’ efficiency and enhancing their scientific and practical skills. Key topics include how to prepare and design scientific research, measuring liver stiffness, determining fibrosis using the latest technologies, advanced techniques to stop gastrointestinal bleeding, and the newest methods for measuring the functional movement of the digestive tract.

The conference will feature in-depth scientific discussions focusing on stomach diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, colon, liver, and bile duct disorders. It will also cover the latest therapeutic advancements and studies in these areas, Al-Farhan explained.

Al-Farhan expressed pride in Kuwait’s active participation in international forums and the prominent role of Kuwaiti doctors in global organizations. She highlighted Kuwait’s achievement of securing a seat in the World Intestinal Sonar Organization for the third consecutive time, representing the Middle East, which she described as a testament to Kuwait’s leadership in the field.

In conclusion, Al-Farhan praised the continuous collaboration with European organizations to train on endoscopic techniques and tumor removal. She emphasized efforts to transform Kuwait into an accredited training center for these procedures, as well as seeking partnerships with leading international hospitals to facilitate liver transplant operations and ensure patient follow-up with the highest medical standards.
