Kerala medical student dies in Uzbekistan after alleged assault by classmate

A 21-year-old medical student from Kerala has died in Uzbekistan following an alleged assault by a fellow student.

The Uzbek authorities have taken the suspect in custody and begun an investigation into the incident.

The victim, Sawariya Basanth from Haripad in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, was a first-year MBBS student at Bukhara State Medical Institute.

The accused, identified as 23-year-old Sadarul Anam from Malappuram district in Kerala, was reportedly a classmate and friend of the victim.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday during an argument between the two students. Investigators allege that Anam assaulted Sawariya with a laptop during the confrontation, causing severe injuries.

She was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital after losing consciousness, but doctors were unable to save her.

Uzbek authorities arrested Anam on the same day, and he remains in custody as police continue their investigation. The motive behind the alleged attack has not yet been determined.

Sawariya had travelled to Uzbekistan in December to pursue her medical studies. Her family members travelled between the Gulf and Kerala following news of the incident, with her father, who works in Kuwait, returning home after learning of her death.

Her body has reportedly been brought to New Delhi, and arrangements are being made to transport her remains to Kerala for the final rites.
