NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has described the latest US strikes on Iran as “absolutely necessary,” saying Washington was responding to what he called a violation of the fragile ceasefire between the two sides.
Speaking ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday, Rutte said the United States had a responsibility to respond after Iran reportedly launched attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a key international shipping route.
“When you have a ceasefire and Iran is basically violating the ceasefire, I think it is totally crucial that the US forcefully reacts,” Rutte told reporters.
The escalation has placed renewed pressure on efforts to end the conflict, with international leaders warning that further military exchanges could complicate diplomatic initiatives.
