Italy suspends defence agreement with Israel

Rome halts automatic renewal of its long-standing defence cooperation pact with Israel, signaling a notable diplomatic shift as regional conflict pressures mount.

Italy has suspended the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Tuesday. The deal, which covers military equipment exchange, training, and defence technology cooperation, will not be extended under its scheduled renewal cycle.

Meloni said the decision was taken “in view of the current situation,” as Italy reassesses its defence and diplomatic posture amid escalating instability in the Middle East.

The move marks a significant recalibration in relations between Italy and Israel, both of which have maintained close defence and security ties for years.

Italy has traditionally been one of Israel’s key European partners in defence cooperation, including joint military technology projects and arms-related agreements. Suspending the renewal signals growing European unease over the widening regional conflict and its humanitarian impact.

The agreement, originally signed in 2003 and in force since 2016, renews automatically every five years unless explicitly halted. It has enabled cooperation on procurement, training, and defence-industrial development between the two countries.

In recent months, tensions have risen across the region, particularly involving Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, prompting increased diplomatic pressure within Europe to reassess defence and trade alignments.

Analysts see Italy’s move as part of a wider shift in European policy discussions, where humanitarian concerns and regional stability are increasingly influencing defence partnerships.
