The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has welcomed the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Legal Committee decision condemning Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz, including the imposition of transit fees on vessels and threats to maritime security.
In a statement, GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al-Budaiwi praised the resolution adopted during the committee’s 113th session, which strongly criticized Iran’s closure of the strategic waterway, its attacks and threats against ships, and its actions targeting the territories of GCC states and Jordan, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Budaiwi also highlighted the committee’s condemnation of Iran’s threats to deploy naval mines in and around the Strait, describing the resolution as a significant step toward safeguarding international navigation.
He commended the role of the United Arab Emirates in leading efforts to draft the resolution, emphasizing its importance in reinforcing maritime security.
The GCC chief stressed the need for the international community to ensure the implementation of the resolution in line with international law, guaranteeing the safe and uninterrupted passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
