From diet to discipline, scientists uncover keys to staying calm under pressure
Simple lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy breakfast routine, getting at least six hours of sleep, and incorporating fish oil into the diet, can significantly enhance psychological resilience.

- Researchers found that regular healthy habits play a major role in building resilience
- Frequent fast-food consumption, staying up late, and drug use were associated with lower resilience
- Eating breakfast at least five times a week and engaging in daily physical activity for 20 minutes or more were strongly linked to higher resilience levels
Scientists define psychological resilience as the ability to manage thoughts effectively and adapt calmly when facing stress, anxiety, or high-pressure situations, maintaining composure where others may panic.
A research team in the United States explored the key factors that help individuals develop this resilience, including the ability to regulate emotions, behaviors, and thinking patterns during challenging or rapidly changing circumstances.
According to Lena Bigdach, an assistant professor at Binghamton University, psychological resilience involves reshaping one’s mindset in stressful situations and using mental resources to overcome anxiety.
The study, published in the Journal of American College Health, examined 401 university students, tracking their eating habits, sleep patterns, and exercise routines.
Researchers found that regular healthy habits play a major role in building resilience. Eating breakfast at least five times a week and engaging in daily physical activity for 20 minutes or more were strongly linked to higher resilience levels.
In contrast, frequent fast-food consumption, staying up late, and drug use were associated with lower resilience.
The study also revealed that consuming fish oil four to five times weekly can contribute positively to mental strength.
Bigdach emphasized that simple lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy breakfast routine, getting at least six hours of sleep, and incorporating fish oil into the diet, can significantly enhance psychological resilience.
