EVF acts to prevent damage to Umm Al-Maradim’s coral reefs

The diving team of the Environmental Voluntary Foundation (EVF) has completed a comprehensive maintenance operation of marine moorings around Umm Al-Maradim Island, covering the southern, western, and eastern sides, particularly in densely populated coral reef areas.

Environmental projects manager Mahmoud Ashkanani said the initiative responds to increasing demand from divers, fishermen, and tourists, stressing that moorings are essential to prevent anchor damage and protect marine biodiversity from human impact.

He highlighted that coral reefs are not only visually significant but serve as the “lungs of the sea,” supporting marine life, maintaining ecological balance, and protecting coastlines from erosion.

Their loss, he warned, would disrupt the marine food chain and destroy a critical natural resource.
Since launching the project 30 years ago, the team has worked to install moorings at depths of 5 to 15 meters along reef slopes to eliminate harmful anchoring practices.

The project uses durable, eco-friendly materials and strategically selected locations to ensure safe access for boats while preserving reef health.

Ashkanani noted that since 1986, the team has led multiple conservation efforts, including removing marine debris such as fishing nets, sunken boats, and waste, participating in the Coral Watch program to monitor reef health, and conducting public awareness campaigns.

He urged visitors to avoid fishing in reef areas, refrain from littering, and protect turtle nesting sites, emphasizing the need to preserve Kuwait’s islands as models of environmental sustainability and natural beauty.
