Kuwait joins global effort to clear plastic waste from shores

On “World Cleanup Day,” the Environmental Voluntary Foundation’s diving team removed large amounts of plastic, microplastic waste, and old carpet pieces from the shoreline near the Kuwait Towers.

  • The coastal cleanup campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the cleanliness of the marine environment and to encourage participation in such initiatives to change behaviors and promote sustainable practices.

The Environmental Voluntary Foundation’s diving team, together with a group of volunteers, carried out a coastal cleanup near the Kuwait Towers on the occasion of “World Cleanup Day,” observed on September 20, Al Rai newspaper reported. The campaign resulted in the removal of large amounts of plastic, microplastic waste, and old carpet pieces from the shoreline.

Dr. Dhari Al-Huwail, the team’s external relations officer, told the Kuwait News Agency that the group takes part in the World Cleanup Day campaign every year. Held on the third Saturday of September, the initiative is organized globally to collect and remove waste from beaches and waterways.

He added, “The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the cleanliness of the marine environment and to encourage participation in such initiatives to change behaviors and promote sustainable practices.”

Dr. Al-Huwail explained that “World Cleanup Day” is organized in cooperation with non-profit organizations and individual volunteers to collect and document waste, helping identify its sources, develop solutions, and combat it effectively.

He emphasized the team’s ongoing commitment to protecting and rehabilitating the marine environment, carrying out periodic coastal cleanups throughout the year to support tourism, maintain ecological balance, and address pollution by cleaning both the seabed and surrounding waters.

Dr. Al-Huwail also highlighted the dangers of plastic waste and its harmful effects on marine and coastal ecosystems, noting that it kills thousands of sea creatures, birds, and turtles, posing a serious threat to their survival.

He praised the combined efforts of public and private institutions, civil society, and volunteers in safeguarding the marine environment, stressing that such cooperation reflects environmental awareness and the shared responsibility to ensure sustainability for future generations.
