Kuwait Towers added to ALECSO’s Arab Heritage List

. . . recognized as modern Arab architectural heritage

Director of the Culture Department at the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Hamid Al-Nofli announced that the iconic Kuwait Towers have been officially added to ALECSO’s Arab Heritage List under the “modern architecture” category.

He described the towers as one of the most prominent landmarks in contemporary Arab heritage, combining cultural significance with architectural brilliance.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency after the announcement during ALECSO’s ninth regional forum in Beirut on July 28, Al-Nofli highlighted the towers’ unique engineering, creative design, and aesthetic value, which also earned it a place in the organization’s Register of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Arab Countries.

Al-Nofli noted that the register differs from those maintained by UNESCO or ISESCO, as it focuses on the creative dimension of Arab architecture and celebrates the ingenuity of Arab engineers.

While it includes many ancient cities that have preserved their historical character, the register also embraces modern heritage—contemporary structures of exceptional architectural value—such as the Kuwait Towers.

The register aims to safeguard Arab architectural and urban heritage, raise public awareness, and integrate heritage into tourism, economic, and cultural sectors, contributing to sustainable development.

Sites included are evaluated based on strict technical criteria by a panel of Arab experts, with each nomination drawn from a country’s official preliminary list.

Al-Nofli emphasized that inclusion in the register not only boosts preservation and protection efforts but also promotes cultural and economic opportunities, opening new horizons for heritage sites to play an active role in development initiatives.
