Kuwait to build medical city for retirees with 243 million dinars

The project, located in the Amghara area on an 860,000 square meter plot, is designed to include a medical sector with a hospital housing 400 beds, expandable to 800 beds.

The Kuwait Medical City project aims to provide medical care to retirees at the lowest cost to the state, create a large number of jobs for Kuwaitis, and attract patients seeking treatment abroad. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

The hospital will offer medical services like outpatient care, long-term care, and rehabilitation, surrounded by residential, commercial, and recreational areas, along with infrastructure services and green spaces.

 

The Public Institution for Social Security is progressing with the development of the initial infrastructure for the Kuwait Medical City project, which is primarily intended for treating retired citizens.

A document reviewed by Al-Qabas newspaper revealed that the estimated cost of the project is KD 243 million, with KD 50 million allocated in the budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026 to cover the project’s obligations.

The document indicated that the KMCT-A 132 KV power station project at Kuwait Medical City has been completed, and the civil works have been finalized and handed over to the Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy.

The Public Institution for Social Security established the Kuwait Medical City Company to oversee the study, design, construction, and operation of the medical project, which aims to provide high-quality healthcare to Kuwaiti retirees and others. The project is located in the Amgharaarea on a plot of land spanning 860,000 square meters.

The document also stated that the infrastructure design work for the project has been completed, and quotations from contractors for the infrastructure works tender have been received. The bids are currently being reviewed by the consultant, KEO.

The document revealed that the qualitative objectives of the Kuwait Medical City project are as follows:

  • Establishing a hospital primarily to treat Kuwaiti retirees, along with other categories.
  • Developing the health sector and its services in the State of Kuwait.
  • Activating the role of the private sector in hospital management.
  • Establishing an integrated health city system that focuses on both treatment and prevention.
  • Building a hospital and its affiliated facilities based on international standards of quality and management.
  • Developing the research sector in medical fields.
  • Providing professional and technical jobs for Kuwaitis.
  • Preparing training programs for medical students at Kuwait University.

According to the document, the indicators for measuring the achievement of the project’s objectives include providing medical care to retirees at the lowest cost to the state, creating a large number of jobs for Kuwaitis, and attracting patients who seek treatment abroad. The medical city is planned to include a medical sector with a hospital housing 400 beds, with the potential for expansion to 800 beds.

It is planned to build five centers, which are: Heart and respiratory diseases, digestive system, urinary tract and kidneys and bones.

In addition to various medical services such as outpatient clinics, long-term care, and rehabilitation services, the hospital will be surrounded by numerous non-medical elements, including residential, commercial, and recreational areas, as well as infrastructure services and green spaces.

Development of the Kuwait Medical City project

The development of the Kuwait Medical City project is progressing with key milestones planned over the coming years. Consulting offices will be invited to design the hospital in July 2025, followed by the evaluation of bids, award, and design process in November 2025.

The contract with the winning design office is set to be signed in December 2025, with the hospital design and medical equipment selection expected to be finalized by September 2026. Contractors will be qualified and tendering will take place in June 2027, with the implementation of the hospital set to begin through a tender process in September 2027. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.
