Kuwait secures 35th place worldwide in Numbeo Quality of Life Index 2026

The annual index evaluates countries based on factors that shape residents’ daily experiences. These include purchasing power, safety, healthcare quality, cost of living, property affordability, traffic conditions, pollution levels, and climate.
Kuwait recorded a Quality of Life Index score of approximately 161, placing it ahead of many developed economies and reflecting its continued appeal as a destination for both citizens and expatriates.
Strong economic fundamentals
One of Kuwait’s biggest strengths is its exceptionally high Purchasing Power Index of 185.8, among the highest in the world. The figure indicates that residents generally enjoy strong purchasing power relative to the cost of goods and services, supported by competitive salaries and comparatively low taxation.
Kuwait also scored well for affordability — Cost of Living Index: 43.4 (Low); Property Price-to-Income Ratio: 6.09 (Low)
These figures suggest that while housing prices have risen in recent years, home ownership remains comparatively more affordable than in many global cities, while everyday living costs remain relatively moderate by international standards.
Safety remains a key advantage
Kuwait continues to maintain its reputation as one of the safer countries in the region, recording a Safety Index of 67.5, which contributed significantly to its overall quality-of-life ranking.
Security, political stability and relatively low crime rates continue to make Kuwait an attractive destination for professionals and families alike.
Areas for improvement
Despite its strong overall performance, the report identifies several challenges that continue to affect Kuwait’s quality-of-life score.
The Healthcare Index stood at 58.6, indicating room for improvement in healthcare quality and public perception.
Environmental concerns also weighed on the country’s ranking, with Kuwait registering a Pollution Index of 74.2, one of the weaker indicators in the assessment.
Similarly, the country’s harsh climatic conditions resulted in a relatively low Climate Index of 20.2, reflecting the impact of extreme summer temperatures on overall living conditions.
Regional comparison
Within Asia and the Middle East, Kuwait remains among the better-performing nations but trails several of its Gulf neighbors.
According to Numbeo’s GCC rankings, Oman secured the top position, followed by Qatar in second place and the United Arab Emirates in third, Kuwait placed fourth and Saudi Arabia ranks fifth.
The index provides an overall picture of living standards by considering multiple indicators rather than relying solely on income or GDP.
The Quality of Life Index is calculated based on eight principal components that reflect the overall living conditions in each country.
These factors include purchasing power, safety, healthcare quality, cost of living, property price-to-income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution levels and climate conditions. Countries with higher overall scores are considered to offer better living standards and a stronger quality of life for residents.
Kuwait’s position among the world’s top 35 countries highlights its continued strengths as a high-income nation offering strong purchasing power, affordable living costs and a secure environment.
However, the findings also point to opportunities for further improvement, particularly in healthcare services, environmental sustainability and urban livability.
Addressing these areas could help Kuwait climb further in future editions of the global quality-of-life rankings while supporting the broader objectives of Kuwait Vision 2035.
