Kuwait, China move to deepen defense cooperation amid regional security challenges

Kuwait is looking to deepen its military and defense partnership with China as part of broader efforts to strengthen security cooperation with friendly nations and enhance regional stability, senior defense officials said.
Speaking during a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Kuwait to mark the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA),
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Meshal Al-Sabah praised the longstanding relationship between Kuwait and China, describing it as a strategic partnership founded on mutual respect, constructive dialogue and shared interests in regional peace and stability.
He said Kuwait remains committed to expanding defense cooperation with Beijing in ways that contribute to security, stability and prosperity across the region.
“Kuwait is always keen to build bridges of defense cooperation with countries around the world,” Sheikh Abdullah said, adding that the country’s defense policy is based on strengthening military partnerships with friendly nations.
The ceremony was attended by the representative of the Chief of the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army and Commander of the Artillery Corps, Brigadier General Faisal Al-Ajil, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organizations.
Cooperation Extends to Defense Industries
Addressing questions on potential collaboration in air defense systems and unmanned aerial technologies, Sheikh Abdullah said Kuwait develops defense cooperation with each partner according to specific areas of expertise.
He noted that cooperation with China currently includes military industries, particularly the production of light and medium-calibre ammunition within Kuwait.
The defense official also disclosed that a delegation from the Kuwaiti Armed Forces visited China last week to discuss expanding bilateral military cooperation and identifying new areas of collaboration that serve the strategic interests of both countries.
When asked whether new defense agreements or joint military exercises were under consideration, Sheikh Abdullah said any future initiatives would be announced “at the appropriate time.”
China Signals Commitment to Stronger Military Partnership
The Chinese Embassy’s Military Attaché highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral defense relations, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to implementing existing military cooperation agreements and expanding operational collaboration with Kuwait.
The remarks from both sides underscore the continued strengthening of Kuwait-China defense ties as Kuwait seeks to diversify its international military partnerships and enhance its defense capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.
