Kuwait explores battery storage, renewable energy to boost power supply ahead of summer

As the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy continues to make headway in its annual maintenance efforts—having completed approximately 76% of work on electricity generation units—officials are now actively exploring rapid-response initiatives to ensure the country’s electricity supply can meet soaring summer demands.

Battery Storage Among Solutions Under Study

Sources revealed to Al-Rai that the ministry is evaluating the use of large-scale battery systems to store surplus electricity generated during evening hours, when demand typically drops. The stored power would then be deployed during peak consumption periods, helping alleviate stress on the national grid, reports Al-Rai daily.

“The ministry aims to take advantage of off-peak generation by storing excess energy in batteries, which could then be redirected during high-demand hours,” the sources explained. Technical teams are currently studying the feasibility of installing such batteries and determining how best to integrate them with transmission and distribution stations.

Solar Power Projects and Emergency Imports Also Considered

Meanwhile with the battery storage initiative, the ministry is also studying the rapid construction of four solar power plants, including determining appropriate sites for their development. These projects are seen as strategic moves to diversify Kuwait’s energy mix and reduce reliance on conventional power generation.

Additionally, another emergency measure under review involves establishing ship-based power terminals, which could supply Kuwait with up to 800 megawatts of electricity in the short term.

These initiatives reflect the ministry’s proactive approach to energy management, ensuring that Kuwait remains equipped to handle the expected surge in electricity demand during the peak summer months—while also laying the groundwork for sustainable energy solutions in the future.
