Iran tells US it will not dismantle its nuclear program

During indirect talks with the U.S. in Muscat, Oman the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has affirmed that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes and firmly rejected any calls to dismantle it.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Tehran has outlined Iran’s “red lines” while saying at the same time Iran is ready to scale back uranium enrichment to levels permitted under the 2015 nuclear deal, in exchange for significant concessions. These include access to billions of dollars frozen abroad and an end to U.S. pressure on Chinese buyers of Iranian oil, as part of broader sanctions relief.

Iranian officials emphasized the need for rapid easing of nuclear-related sanctions, which have severely impacted the country’s economy. Araqchi confirmed that both parties have agreed to meet again next Saturday to continue discussions on the general framework of a potential new agreement, underscoring a shared commitment to progress in the negotiations.
