U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to deliver a powerful military response against Iran after American forces intercepted ballistic missiles fired toward U.S. military positions in Jordan, warning that Tehran would face a “crushing defeat.”
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said the United States would retaliate forcefully against what Washington described as an attempted surprise attack on American forces in the Middle East.
“We will hit them hard. They will be hit hard,” Trump said, adding that the United States would respond to the missile attack targeting American positions in Jordan.
The president also described Iran-backed armed groups as “a cancer in the world,” signalling that his administration was considering additional warnings and measures against militias linked to Tehran.
The remarks came after the U.S. military said it had intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched by Iran before they reached their intended targets.
Trump said American forces had only minutes to respond but successfully neutralized the threat.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) later announced that it had carried out precision strikes against what it described as Iranian-backed targets in Iraq.
According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted facilities used by armed groups directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to attack U.S. forces and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
CENTCOM said American and Saudi aircraft struck multiple logistics hubs and weapons storage sites in eastern Iraq, warning Iran and its allied groups to halt further attacks or face additional military action.
The escalation prompted a response from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), which said 20 of its members were killed and 32 wounded in strikes across seven Iraqi provinces. Iranian media also reported that four military advisers from the Revolutionary Guard were killed.
