Inauguration of Switzerland’s new embassy building ‘rare and unique historical moment’: Minister Cassis
‘The strong bilateral relationship is founded not only on common interests but also on trust, sincerity, and mutual understanding that have evolved over decades’

The Swiss Federal Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis, affirmed that the inauguration of Switzerland’s new embassy building in Kuwait symbolizes the deep-rooted friendship and mutual respect shared between the two nations over six decades. Cassis described the occasion as a “rare and unique historical moment,” coming just ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and Switzerland.

In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Cassis highlighted that the strong bilateral relationship is founded not only on common interests but also on trust, sincerity, and mutual understanding that have evolved over decades. He recalled that the origins of this friendship date back to the 1930s, when a visionary young Kuwaiti first recognized the quality and precision of Swiss manufacturing, laying the groundwork for enduring ties between the two peoples.
Cassis also praised Kuwait’s appreciation for Swiss precision, humorously noting that “Kuwait operates on Swiss time,” as illustrated by His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad’s punctual arrival at the event. He added that the first partnership between the Swiss watchmaker Omega and the Behbehani family marked the beginning of a fruitful economic relationship, which today includes more than 12 Swiss companies and around 450 Swiss brands operating in Kuwait.
The Swiss foreign minister underscored that the bond between the two countries extends beyond trade and business. He recounted stories shared by Kuwaiti guests during a dinner event, who spoke of cherished memories in Switzerland across three generations, reflecting how deeply the country has become a “second home” for many Kuwaiti families. Cassis also expressed special appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad, describing him as “Switzerland’s greatest friend in Kuwait.”

Addressing the broader regional context, Cassis said that the embassy’s opening reflects Switzerland’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the Gulf and fostering peace, stability, and prosperity without hidden agendas. He shared insights from his regional tour, which included visits to Jordan and Iraq, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and reconciliation while expressing optimism about the improving relations between Kuwait and Iraq.
Cassis highlighted that Kuwait and Switzerland share two key values — neutrality and humility — which underpin their diplomatic conduct and mutual respect. Both nations, he said, work quietly yet effectively toward peace and cooperation. Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya echoed this sentiment, affirming the depth of bilateral relations and the commitment to expanding cooperation in political, economic, and cultural fields, while continuing coordination in international forums, particularly at the United Nations.

Swiss Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Tiziano Balmelli hailed the embassy’s opening as a testament to the enduring friendship between both countries. He praised the high-level participation in the ceremony and extended a warm invitation to more Kuwaitis to visit Switzerland, noting that many families have maintained ties for generations. “Switzerland is your country too,” he said, reflecting the closeness and mutual affection that have defined Kuwaiti-Swiss relations for nearly a century.
