In a major step toward enhancing user accessibility, Google has launched a new “Simplify” feature for its iOS app, designed to make complex and technical text on web pages easier to understand — without the need to leave the page or turn to external tools.
Powered by the company’s AI-driven Gemini platform, the feature intelligently rewrites dense passages into clearer, more digestible language while preserving their original meaning and critical details, according to a TechCrunch report.
How It Works
Users simply highlight any portion of text within a web page viewed through the Google app and tap the newly added “Simplify” icon. Instantly, a rephrased version appears, streamlining comprehension while allowing readers to stay immersed in the content.
Google demonstrated the tool’s utility by simplifying a medically complex paragraph about lung pathologies into reader-friendly language—translating scientific jargon into clear, accurate explanations.
Strategic Move Against AI Rivals
By embedding this feature within its own app, Google is positioning itself against AI competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company aims to keep users within its digital ecosystem while meeting growing demand for real-time content clarification across fields like medicine, education, and technology.
“With Simplify, we aim to rephrase complex ideas accurately and without errors or omitting important information, helping users easily understand deep content without distorting the meaning,” Google said in a statement.
The feature will roll out gradually to iOS users over the coming days, potentially transforming how millions interact with challenging content online.
