The European Union has announced the start of full operation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) across all Schengen Area countries as of 10 April 2026.
The new system replaces the traditional stamping of passports with a digital mechanism that records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays.
Under the system, travellers’ personal data, including passport details, fingerprints, and facial images, are recorded upon entry and exit.
The EES is part of the European Union’s efforts to modernise border management, enhance security, and improve the monitoring of travellers within the Schengen Area.
The system has been gradually implemented since October 2025 and has now become fully operational across all external borders of the Schengen zone.
