China urges Iran to guarantee safe passage in Strait of Hormuz

Balancing sovereignty and trade, Wang Yi pushes for stability and free navigation amid ‘Window for Peace’

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi, during a telephone call between them on Wednesday, to make every effort to restore normal shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi stressed that while Iran’s sovereignty and security in the Strait of Hormuz must be respected and protected, the freedom and safety of navigation through the waterway must also be guaranteed.

He explained that it is in the interest of the entire international community for shipping traffic to return to normal in the strait, reports Al-Rai daily.

He pointed out that the situation is going through a crucial transformation phase and that the window for peace has begun to open.

Wang Yi stressed that China supports adherence to the ceasefire and negotiations, which he said serve the interests of Iran, the region and the world.

He added that China is ready to continue to exert pressure to calm the situation and improve relations between the countries of the region.
