Maritime security concerns have intensified after a cargo vessel reported being struck by an “unknown projectile” near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman, in waters bordering the vital maritime chokepoint that handles nearly 20 percent of global oil shipments.
UKMTO classified the incident as an attack. The advisory, based on information received from military authorities, said the vessel broadcast a distress message on VHF Channel 16, reporting that it had been struck by an unidentified projectile at around 2200 UTC (2:00 a.m. Gulf time on Tuesday).
Maritime authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
UKMTO has urged all vessels operating in the area to exercise heightened caution, maintain vigilance, and immediately report any suspicious activity while transiting the region.
No information has yet been released regarding the vessel’s identity, flag, and ownership, the extent of any damage, possible casualties, or the nature and origin of the projectile. As of Tuesday morning, no group had claimed responsibility.
The latest incident adds to a series of unexplained security events involving commercial shipping in waters off Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, underscoring growing concerns over maritime safety in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical gateway linking Gulf energy producers with global markets.
With geopolitical tensions continuing to simmer across the region, the attack is expected to reinforce calls for enhanced maritime security measures along one of the world’s busiest and most economically significant sea lanes.
