China has pressed into service the world’s largest fully electric container ship, marking a major step toward greener maritime transport and accelerating the shift to low-carbon shipping in coastal regions.
The vessel, Ning Yuan Dian Kun, officially entered commercial service last Wednesday, departing from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port en route to Jiaxing Port, a key shipping corridor that has traditionally depended on fossil fuel-powered ships.
Developed by the Shanghai Institute of Commercial Ship Design and Research, the ship features a fully electric propulsion system, enabling zero-emission operations alongside advanced intelligent navigation and efficiency systems.
Measuring 127.8 meters in length and 21.6 meters in width, the vessel has a design draft of 6.2 meters and can carry up to 742 standard containers. It is powered by 10 containerized battery units with a combined capacity of 20,000 kilowatt-hours, supported by two 875-kilowatt propulsion engines.
The ship is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1,462 tons annually while delivering a pollution-free and low-noise operating environment.
On the technology front, the vessel is equipped with smart navigation systems capable of automatic collision avoidance, precise route tracking, and seamless integration between ship, shore, and cloud-based controls. A dual charging system, combining high-voltage shore power with rapid battery swapping, ensures operational flexibility and efficiency, reports Al-Rai daily.
Its open deck design enhances cargo handling, while a streamlined bow reduces air resistance by up to 20 percent, improving overall performance.
The name “Kun” is inspired by a giant mythical fish in Chinese culture, while its sister ship, Ning Yuan Dian Peng, named after a mythical bird, is scheduled for sea trials in May and delivery in June. Together, the two vessels are expected to form the backbone of a large-scale green shipping network on fixed routes.
Chen Xiaofeng, president of Ningbo Shipping Co., Ltd., said the project reflects the company’s commitment to advancing the green transformation of the maritime sector and supporting China’s carbon reduction goals.
