Cassation upholds 3-year prison term for student over tweets insulting Amir

The Court of Cassation has upheld the verdicts of the Criminal Court and the Court of Appeal, sentencing a female Kuwaiti university student to three years in prison with hard labor.
The charges relate to insulting the Amir and inciting the overthrow of the regime, based on articles and tweets published on the social media platform X via a fake account.
In court, the defendant denied all charges, claiming that an individual residing outside Kuwait had exploited her account and used it to publish content without her knowledge.
She further alleged that this person threatened her directly, warning her not to delete the posts written in her name.
Despite her defense, the court found sufficient grounds to uphold the conviction, reinforcing the initial sentence issued by the lower courts.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about cybersecurity, digital identity misuse, and the serious consequences of online expression in Kuwait under national security and public order laws.
