Tragedy strikes Xinjiang; 5 dead, 24 injured as suspension bridge cable snaps

Five people were killed and 24 others injured after a cable on a suspension bridge snapped in north-western China’s Xinjiang region, sending victims plummeting from the bridge, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

The accident occurred at 6:18 p.m. yesterday in the Xiata scenic area of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, a location known for its natural beauty and historical significance.

Verified videos circulating on social media show the bridge tilted and unstable, with handrails made from cables hanging loosely. Parts of the structure can be seen dangling over a river, while two individuals are shown lying on the ground beneath the bridge.

In one video, a victim is being moved using a wooden plank as a stretcher, while others rush to assist and carry the makeshift stretcher from the site.

The 65 sq km Xiata area, home to mountain passes, valleys, rivers, and ancient cultural ruins, has been shut down pending a full investigation.

A central government task force has been dispatched to the site to supervise the investigation and medical treatment of the injured.
