Uzbekistan sets October 27 for key parliamentary elections

The elections, under a new mixed electoral system, will feature 75 deputies elected directly by majority and 75 by proportional votes, all using an electronic system.

The elections represent a significant shift from the past, occurring in a new social and political environment as outlined in the Constitution of Uzbekistan.

Electoral legislation now features a new system and requires political parties to ensure at least 40% of their MP candidates are women.

 

Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev, Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, announced that the next Legislative Assembly elections will be held on October 27 under a new mixed electoral system, as reported by Q8-Press.

He added that the candidates’ campaign commenced on July 26 and noted that a constitutional law transitioning the country from a majority-based system to a mixed system took effect in December 2023.

These elections represent a significant shift from the past, occurring in a new social and political environment as outlined in the Constitution of Uzbekistan. They will use a mixed electoral system that combines majority and proportional systems.

This major change will involve the election of 75 deputies directly through the majority system, while the remaining 75 deputies will be elected based on votes for political parties under a proportional system, facilitated through an electronic system.

Electoral legislation has been significantly enhanced to align with advanced democratic standards. This includes the introduction of a new system of electoral bodies led by the Central Election Commission and a requirement for political parties to ensure that at least 40% of their candidates for MPs are women.
