UK and Kuwait mark 125 years of ties with collaborative mural by British Artist

The British Embassy in Kuwait and Cardiff University have announced the completion of a collaborative mural artwork, marking the continuation of celebrations commemorating 125 years of official diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the State of Kuwait.

In a press release, the embassy stated that the mural, created by British artist Lee Ferry, represents the second and final part of an artistic project that began in Kuwait last year. The first part was unveiled at the British Embassy in November and featured symbols from both Kuwaiti and British cultures, with a particular emphasis on shared postal and maritime heritage.

The second section of the mural was completed at Trefforest Gardens on Cardiff University’s campus. It reflects the rich cultural heritage that has formed the foundation of the enduring partnership between the two nations for over 125 years.

The artwork features symbolic elements from both cultures — such as the Welsh dragon and daffodil, the Kuwaiti falcon and arfaj flower — alongside a visual fusion of traditional Kuwaiti sadu weaving patterns and Celtic motifs. The mural also incorporates butterflies and bees, symbolizing biodiversity and the psychological support the garden provides to university students.

British Ambassador to Kuwait, Belinda Lewis, expressed her delight at the completion of the project, stating, “Our celebration of 125 years of partnership was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the depth of the relationship between our two countries and highlight creativity and talent from across the United Kingdom. From the Cardiff mural, to the visit by Northern Irish illustrator Clive McFarland, to the ‘Partnership 125’ tartan blending Scottish and Kuwaiti heritage, and the agricultural exchange program at England’s Highgrove Gardens – these events exemplified the unity and diversity of the UK.”

Professor Rudolf Alleman, Cardiff University’s Vice President for International Relations, added, “This mural is a visual symbol of 125 years of partnership between Cardiff and Kuwait. It reflects the university’s legacy of hosting Kuwaiti students and our ongoing collaboration. It is an artistic expression of cultural convergence between Kuwaiti and Celtic symbols, and a shared ambition to make a positive impact and build a prosperous future.”

Artist Lee Ferry also expressed pride in participating in the initiative, saying, “It was a great honor to be commissioned to create this mural. The design was inspired by my visit to Kuwait, where I learned about its culture and history. It was a deeply enriching experience that allowed me to produce an artwork that reflects the national identities of both countries, while adding a visual beauty that enhances the public space.”
