At least 17 people were killed and more than 514,700 others were affected by Typhoon Wipha, locally known as Inday, and the southwest monsoon, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Saturday.
The council said the deaths resulted from drowning incidents and landslides, noting that all reported fatalities remain under verification, adding that four people were injured, while nine others remain missing.
The typhoon and enhanced southwest monsoon affected about 112,500 families nationwide, with nearly 2,900 families displaced and currently staying in 77 evacuation centers.
The government has so far provided PHP 16.41 million (around USD 290,000) in assistance to affected residents, the council said. Earlier on Saturday, the Philippine weather agency (PAGASA) said Typhoon Wipha had left the Philippine Area of Responsibility but warned that the southwest monsoon could continue bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the country.
