US President Donald Trump departed Beijing on Friday after concluding a closely watched two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid global tensions over trade, Iran and Taiwan.
Trump boarded Air Force One for the return flight to Washington following a series of meetings, a working lunch and a traditional tea ceremony held at Zhongnanhai, the Chinese leadership compound often described as China’s equivalent of the White House.
Despite ongoing differences between the two global powers on key geopolitical issues, both leaders adopted a notably cordial tone during the visit and emphasized the importance of maintaining stable relations between Washington and Beijing.
Before departing, Trump said he and Xi had reached “fantastic trade deals,” although no specific details were announced publicly.
Xi described the summit as a “historic and landmark visit,” saying both sides had agreed on a constructive and stable path for China-US relations.
He added that the meetings helped strengthen mutual understanding and deepen trust between the two countries.
Trump was seen off at Beijing airport by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, while schoolchildren waving Chinese and American flags chanted farewell messages as the president boarded Air Force One.
Before entering the aircraft, Trump turned toward the crowd, waved and raised his fist in his signature gesture but did not speak to reporters before departure.
The summit also focused heavily on the ongoing war involving Iran, although China appeared cautious about taking a larger role in resolving the conflict despite mounting US pressure.
Another sensitive issue discussed was Taiwan, with Xi reportedly warning that disagreements over the island could place China and the United States on a path toward confrontation if tensions continue escalating.
While the visit produced positive diplomatic optics and friendly public messaging, many details surrounding the reported trade agreements and future strategic understandings between the two countries remain unclear.
