Tareq Al-Asfour chairs meeting on combating trafficking in persons

The Permanent National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling discussed national and international measures to unify and streamline efforts against trafficking, and reviewed its ambitious work plan for 2025–2028.

The Permanent National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling discussed proposals for the next stages, including the results of a joint visit with the Kuwaiti Bar Association to a shelter, focusing on enhancing legal assistance for residents.

The Permanent National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Migrant Smuggling convened its 19th meeting, chaired by Tareq Ali Al-Asfour, Deputy Chairman and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, with representatives from all committee entities in attendance, as reported by Al Anba newspaper.

At its meeting, the committee discussed agenda topics of national and international importance related to executive and legislative measures to combat trafficking in persons. The aim was to ensure that national efforts are unified and systematically implemented through coherent working mechanisms.

The committee also reviewed specific proposals from the entities represented, focusing on the next stages of work. Notably, it examined the results of a joint visit by the committee and the Kuwaiti Bar Association to the shelter headquarters, aiming to identify the best ways to enhance cooperation in providing effective legal assistance to the shelter’s residents.

Key developments in bilateral cooperation with the Counterpart Committee of the Kingdom of Bahrain were also discussed, emphasizing frameworks for exchanging expertise and best practices in combating trafficking in persons.

The committee also reviewed its ambitious work plan for 2025–2028, formulated in line with international best practices and carefully adapted to align with national legislation and frameworks. This plan is now under preparation for adoption and implementation.

On another key issue related to regional cooperation, the committee discussed hosting periodic technical and practical meetings. This included preparations for Kuwait to host, under the National Committee’s auspices, the Sixth Governmental Forum for Combating Trafficking in Persons for Middle Eastern Countries.

The forum will serve as a platform for regional countries to exchange ideas and perspectives on significant and emerging international issues in combating trafficking in persons.
