MoE eyes overhaul of school cafeterias with private sector partnership

The Ministry of Education is exploring a project to modernize and upgrade school cafeterias in partnership with companies specialized in the food services sector.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry is reportedly preparing to hand over the operation of school cafeterias in one educational district to the Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company as a pilot project, education sources told Al-Jarida daily.
The company will be responsible for managing these cafeterias over the course of one full academic year, after which the Ministry will evaluate the results and consider expanding the initiative to include other educational districts across the country.
According to the sources, Minister of Education Dr. Adel Al-Tabtabaei recently held a meeting with representatives from the Kuwait Flour Mills Company to discuss the proposed plan.
During the meeting, the Ministry raised several observations and concerns related to the approved layout of the cafeterias and the general management approach being considered.
The move signals a broader push to improve the quality of food services in schools, ensure better health standards, and streamline cafeteria operations through professional management, particularly as students’ nutritional needs and food safety standards continue to be a focus of education sector reforms.
