Kuwait’s e-commerce market accelerates as online purchases reach 7.1 billion dinars

Kuwait’s e-commerce sector is witnessing strong expansion in 2026, driven by the growing adoption of digital payments, increased consumer reliance on online platforms, and the continued shift toward a digital economy.

Data from the Central Bank of Kuwait showed that the value of electronic purchase transactions conducted through websites inside and outside Kuwait reached approximately 7.103 billion dinars during the first five months of 2026, covering around 155.2 million transactions.

The figures highlight a rapid transformation in consumer behavior, as individuals and businesses increasingly rely on digital payment solutions for daily purchases, supported by improved infrastructure, wider acceptance of online services, and growing confidence in electronic transactions.

Transactions conducted through websites inside Kuwait accounted for the largest share, reaching 6.57 billion dinars through 131.6 million transactions, while purchases made through foreign websites totaled approximately 424.6 million dinars through 19.08 million transactions.

Industry experts said the growth reflects Kuwait’s advanced digital readiness and consumers’ increasing confidence in online shopping, particularly following the introduction of the Digital Commerce Law, which provides clearer regulations on refunds, consumer protection, and dispute resolution.

Delivery Services Fuel Online Growth

The expansion of e-commerce has also strengthened the delivery sector, with food, groceries, electronics, fashion, cosmetics, personal care products, and cooperative societies emerging as the leading categories driving online demand.

Abdulaziz Abdul Latif Bandar, head of the Delivery Company Owners Committee, said competitive pricing, promotional offers, and improved delivery services have contributed significantly to the growth of online sales.

He explained that while free delivery and discounts remain key factors attracting customers, long-term loyalty depends on service quality, including product standards, delivery reliability, driver professionalism, vehicle cleanliness, and customer support.

According to estimates from the committee’s reports, the value of Kuwait’s electronic delivery market reached between 250 million dinars and 300 million dinars during the first quarter of 2026, with daily orders averaging between 450,000 and 550,000 deliveries.

Cooperatives Enter Digital Marketplace

The cooperative sector is also becoming an important component of Kuwait’s expanding online retail landscape.

Fahd Al-Tariji, Executive Director of the Cooperative Delivery Platform, said 15 cooperative societies are currently participating in delivery services through the platform, with plans to add another 26 societies from among the country’s 78 cooperatives.

He noted that the first participating cooperative societies recorded sales of around 25,000 dinars during the first month, with other societies achieving similar results after joining digital delivery platforms.
