Building on the successful implementation of its structural safety monitoring system at Al Hamra Tower, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is expanding the project by installing smart sensors on another high-rise building as part of a broader initiative to strengthen infrastructure resilience using advanced engineering technologies.
The expansion is being carried out in coordination with the relevant authorities and forms part of KISR’s ongoing efforts to enhance the structural safety of Kuwait’s buildings through real-time monitoring and predictive analysis.
The institute has completed specialized research focused on monitoring the structural integrity of high-rise buildings by deploying intelligent sensors capable of measuring a building’s response to dynamic forces, including high winds, sandstorms, environmental changes, and other external stresses.
At Al Hamra Tower, KISR developed a high-precision computational model supported by advanced mathematical algorithms and software that continuously analyzes data collected by the sensors.
The system enables engineers to detect changes in the building’s structural behavior and identify potential damage at an early stage, allowing timely maintenance and preventive intervention before problems escalate.
Researchers said the project represents a significant milestone in the application of engineering intelligence and smart sensing technologies, positioning Kuwait among countries adopting advanced digital solutions to safeguard critical infrastructure.
The technology delivers accurate, real-time information on the condition of structures and identifies areas that may be vulnerable during emergencies such as earthquakes, severe storms, or other natural events. This enables government agencies and emergency planners to respond more effectively and make informed decisions based on continuous monitoring data.
Looking ahead, KISR plans to extend the technology beyond high-rise buildings to include bridges, strategic facilities, and major infrastructure projects across Kuwait.
The wider deployment of intelligent structural monitoring systems is expected to improve public safety, support preventive maintenance strategies, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and advance Kuwait’s vision for sustainable and resilient smart cities.
