Kuwait, US strengthen military cooperation at Annual Joint Committee Meeting

Kuwait and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation during the annual meeting of the Kuwaiti-American Joint Military Committee (JMC), held at the Pentagon.

The meeting was co-chaired by Chief of the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army Lt Gen Khaled Al-Shuraiaan and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East and Central Asia Affairs Michael DiMino, underscoring the importance both sides attach to their longstanding defense partnership.

According to a statement issued by the Kuwaiti General Staff, the meeting included a series of workshops involving military teams from both countries. Discussions focused on ways to further develop bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of military maintenance and training.

The talks also resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on strategic partnership with the Maryland National Guard, further expanding cooperation between Kuwait and the United States at the state-level National Guard level.

The agreement adds another dimension to the longstanding defense relationship between Kuwait and Washington, which includes military training, exercises and broader security cooperation. The United States and Kuwait have previously emphasized the importance of strengthening interoperability and maintaining close coordination on regional security matters.

The annual JMC serves as an important platform for senior Kuwaiti and US defense officials to review existing cooperation and identify areas for further collaboration. Previous meetings have addressed issues ranging from military cooperation and security programs to interoperability and regional security challenges.

The latest meeting’s focus on maintenance and training highlights the practical side of the bilateral defense relationship, aimed at enhancing military readiness and developing the capabilities of the armed forces of both countries.

The partnership with the Maryland National Guard also builds on existing links between Kuwait and Maryland. Maryland National Guard units have previously participated in military exercises in Kuwait, including multinational training focused on areas such as air defense, border security and counterterrorism.

The United States has long maintained extensive defense cooperation with Kuwait, with the two countries working together on a range of security issues and military capabilities. Washington has described Kuwait as an important security partner in the Gulf and has emphasized continued cooperation in areas including regional security and defense coordination.

The latest discussions come amid a broader effort by Kuwait and its international partners to maintain military readiness and strengthen cooperation in response to evolving security challenges in the region. For Kuwait, closer defense cooperation with the United States remains an important component of its broader security strategy, while continued training and institutional partnerships provide opportunities to enhance the capabilities and preparedness of its armed forces.

The signing of the Maryland National Guard agreement is expected to provide an additional framework for military engagement, allowing both sides to build on existing cooperation and explore further opportunities for joint training and professional development.
